Extinct is a German thrash metal band from Kiel, at the coast of the Baltic sea.
The band was originally formed in 2003, although none of those members are till part of the band. Vocalist and bassist Helge Hentrop joined in 2004 and is now the oldest member. They brought out their first album, ‘Pain Palace’ back in 2013, with ‘Incitement of Violence’ being their sophomore album 11 years later.
The album brings us 12 tracks, 3 of those being interludes, with a total runtime of 40 minutes. Extinct brings us high tempo, angry thrash metal with quite a bit of head bobbing riffs. The songs have good hooks to them and reasonably memorable chorusses. The mix has all instruments clearly audible, but it feels very narrow instead of producing a more spread out soundstage allowing the instruments to breathe. It feels like all of the instruments are fighting for the front spot, creating quite a tiring listening experience.
It’s a decent album in a very crowded space. I feel it would stand out more had the mix been done differently and perhaps even a bit less modern. It’d be interesting to hear in a live setting as the songs are well put together with some punishing riffs.
