Cobrakill is a German fievepiece that was formed in 2020. They released their first album ‘Cobratör’ in 2022 and are now following it up with Serpent’s Kiss. The album consists of 12 songs for a total runtime of 47 minutes.
From the cover art to stage names as Toby Ventura and Tommy Guns, their styling puts them firmly in the 80’s. The music also backs this up. Cobrakill offer a mix of hard rock and heavy metal with uncomplicated, but catchy riffs, chorusses and song structures. The cowbell during the chorus of Bazooka is the proverbial cherry on the 80’s styling.
Despite the 80’s styling, the music feels quite fresh and has a sleek, modern production. The solos are nicely integrated in the songs and rarely overstay their welcome. Also harkening back to the eighties are the lyrics, with some songs being overly simple in their lyrical content, ‘Seventeen’ being the prime example. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that one on a Steel Panther album. Standout tracks for me are the opener ‘Above The Law, ‘Bazooka’ and ‘Same Ol’ Nasty Rock N’ Roll’.
Even though most songs are well crafted, I would have enjoyed a bit more variety, or simple being a bit more strict with cutting tracks. I feel 10 instead of 12 tracks would greatly improve the flow of the record.
All in all, I feel Cobrakill delivered a decent, hard rocking album with some fun tracks. This is a band I’d love to see, enjoying the antics with beer in hand. Which is just what I’ll be doing in a couple of months at Huggins Awakening Fest.
Score: 77/100
